E diminished chord

Edim

  • ER
  • G♭3
  • B♭♭5

Barre · dim shape · 7th fret

7fr1243×ERB♭♭5ERG♭3×

What each note does

  • E is the root. It names the chord and is the note your ear hears as home.
  • G is the minor third, a half step below the major third (G♯). That one note is the whole difference between sad and happy.
  • B♭ is the flat fifth. It pulls the chord tight and unstable, which is why diminished chords want to move somewhere.
